ISO 22301 training introduces the business continuity management system (BCMS) that keeps critical activities running during a disruption (disaster, cyber attack, supply interruption and similar). It builds capability in business impact analysis (BIA), risk assessment, RTO and RPO, and continuity plans. A certificate of attendance is issued to participants.
ISO 22301 training covers the requirements of business continuity and of the business continuity management system. The training includes business continuity concepts and terminology, the context of the organization and the business continuity policy, determining critical activities and tolerable periods of disruption through business impact analysis (BIA), risk assessment, recovery objectives (RTO: recovery time objective; RPO: recovery point objective; MTPD: maximum tolerable period of disruption), business continuity strategies and solutions, building business continuity plans and the response structure, exercising and testing, monitoring, internal audit and improvement. The training addresses continuity planning in a practical way through scenario work and explains its relationship with IT disaster recovery (DR).
The training suits business continuity and risk managers, IT and information security teams, quality teams, owners of critical processes and managers; there is no prerequisite. A certificate of attendance or achievement is issued at the end of the training. ISO 22301 training does not by itself give the organization its ISO 22301 certificate; certification is obtained through the audit of an accredited certification body, and the training prepares you for that process. Business continuity is closely linked with ISO 27001 (information security) and with risk management. Business impact analysis determines the effect of a disruption on critical activities and how long those activities can be down (the tolerable period of disruption). The business continuity strategy and the recovery objectives (RTO and RPO) are based on the BIA.
RTO (recovery time objective) is the target for restoring an activity within an acceptable time after a disruption; RPO (recovery point objective) is the maximum acceptable point of data loss. The training teaches how to set these objectives.
Business continuity overlaps with one part of information security (availability), and business continuity appears among the ISO 27001 controls. ISO 22301 treats business continuity as a comprehensive, standalone management system; the two can be used together.
