What is RoHS 2?
On 31 March 2015, European Commission Directive 2015/863 added 4 phthalates to Annex II of the RoHS 2 Directive. RoHS 2 (Directive 2011/65/EU) restricts the use of specified hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) placed on the EU market. The restricted substances (mercury, lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polybrominated biphenyls) are listed in Annex II of the directive.
Directive 2015/863 (EU), dated 31 March 2015 and published in the EU Official Journal on 4 June 2015, amended Annex II of the RoHS 2 Directive by adding 4 phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP). The use of these phthalates in homogeneous materials within EEE is restricted to 0.1% by weight. The mandatory restriction of the 4 added phthalates takes effect on the following dates:
For EEE (including cables and spare parts used for repair, reuse, or functional upgrade), 22 July 2019.
- Medical devices (including in-vitro medical devices): 22 July 2021
- Monitoring and control instruments (including control instruments and industrial monitoring): 22 July 2021
