Why Material Safety Data Sheets are used

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is the single most important legal instrument that sits between a buyer and the supplier of a chemical product. The information on the sheet has to be correct for the product, and the supplier is responsible for making sure that is the case. Beyond accuracy, the sheet is a legal requirement for the workplace.

• Records the chemical and physical properties of the substance in question.
• States the risks and hazards of the substance.
• Sets out how to store, transport, and use the substance safely.
• Provides the data needed for effective control and monitoring of the substance against negative effects on health and the environment.
• Lists the first-aid steps to take in the event of an accident, the possible after-effects, and the information that should be passed to a doctor.

When a chemical product is purchased, the MSDS should be requested with it. Keeping the sheets in Turkish in the workplace is a legal requirement. For imported products, foreign-language safety data sheets have to be translated and reissued in Turkish in line with local regulation. For exported products, the sheets have to be prepared in line with the destination country's regulation and international transport rules.
