What is MSDS?
MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. Current chemical authorities no longer use the word Material, so the document is usually referred to as SDS (Safety Data Sheet). In Turkish, the equivalent term is guvenlik bilgi formu (GBF). The document, prepared by Sistem Patent Kalite, is a 16-section form that covers the negative effects of chemical mixtures or substances on human health and the environment, their physicochemical hazards, and the measures to be taken against those hazards. In Turkey, the content and preparation conditions are defined by the regulation dated 26 December 2008, No. 27092. Only certified individuals can prepare the sheet or translate it into Turkish.
The MSDS is an important part of the work that removes occupational health and safety risks linked to the operation and storage of chemical substances, and it is prepared with the intent of giving the user accurate, sufficient information. The document records the hazards and risks of the substance and other supporting data. Keeping MSDS sheets in Turkish at the workplace is a legal requirement.
