BRC Packaging Standard
Packaging safety is a component of food safety, yet most food safety standards do not cover it in depth. The BRC Global Standard for Packaging Materials (historically known as BRC-IOP) was issued to close that gap. It is a recognised reference for packaging quality and legal conformity and is used by brand owners and retailers as a condition of approval for packaging suppliers.
Packaging Categories Covered
The standard defines the following packaging categories:
- Glass (containers and related)
- Paper and board
- Metals, cans, and foil
- Rigid and flexible plastics
- Wood and other materials
Packaging is assessed in different hygiene categories depending on risk:
- Packaging in direct contact with food
- Secondary packaging not in direct contact with food
- Separate risk-based assessment under the scheme's hygiene categories
Structure of the Standard
The BRCGS Packaging Materials standard is built on six requirement areas:
- Senior management commitment
- Hazard and risk management
- Technical management system (ISO 9001-based documentation)
- Site environment and factory conditions
- Product and process analysis
- Personnel requirements
