Other large European retailers have similarly begun working with third-party audit bodies, using the British model for supplier audits.
For example, German and French retailers have started requiring the IFS standard.
Similar efforts and collaborations have also begun to emerge in the United States.
IFS (International Featured Standards) originates from the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). It emerged in 2000 as a result of efforts to improve food safety by the trade association CIES - The Global Food Business Forum.
It was initially formed with the participation of 40 commercial enterprises in Europe, North America, and Australia. GFSI's aim is to establish a global food safety standardization, enabling businesses to sell safer food products in their own markets. Accordingly, GFSI has defined key criteria to make the food safety standard measurable.
