History of the ISO 22000 Standard

The history of the food safety management system shows the developments and changes that brought the standard to its current form.

The first work, in 1959 to 1960, started with NASA's requirement for a full programme to guarantee the safety of foods and drinks for astronauts in space.

  • 1963: the World Health Organization (WHO) published the HACCP principles in Codex Alimentarius.
  • 1973: NASA and the astronaut food production partners delivered a full joint project, and HACCP entered the record as a concept.
  • 1985: the US National Academy of Sciences recommended that food operators adopt HACCP to support food safety.
  • 14 June 1993: HACCP entered EU law through the Food Hygiene Directive.
  • 1996: HACCP became a legal requirement for the entire European food industry.
  • 16 November 1997: the Turkish Food Codex made HACCP mandatory in the Turkish food industry.
  • 20 February 1998: Denmark published the DS 3027/1998 HACCP standard.
  • 3 March 2003: TS 13001 was published, titled "Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) based food safety management, requirements for food-producing organisations and their suppliers".
  • 1 September 2005: ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Systems, the requirements standard for organisations in the food chain, was published.
  • 26 January 2006: the standard was adopted as TS EN ISO 22000.
