Generating an 8-Digit Barcode Number
Suppose the 8-digit company barcode number 869XXXXX has been assigned. The firm wants to number three items: a notebook, a pen, and an eraser. Each item receives a GTIN that combines the 8-digit company prefix with an item reference and a final check digit.
Note: the check digit is calculated automatically by the barcode system and does not need to be entered by hand.
When an 8-digit barcode is used
The 8-digit GTIN (also called EAN-8) is typically used on small items where a full 13-digit symbol is too large for the packaging, for example confectionery, cosmetics samples, and small stationery. GS1 allocates EAN-8 numbers on a case-by-case basis for products that genuinely cannot carry a longer symbol.
