Generating a 7-Digit Barcode Number
Below is the build sequence for a 7-digit barcode number.
7-digit barcode example
Suppose the 7-digit company barcode number 869XXXX has been assigned. The firm wants to number three items: a table, a long-sleeved blouse, and a shirt. Each item receives a GTIN that combines the 7-digit company prefix with the firm's own item reference and a check digit at the end.
- Company prefix: for example, 1234.
- Item number: a sequential number assigned by the firm, usually starting at 1.
- Check digit: calculated automatically by the barcode system.
Why the company prefix length matters
A shorter company prefix leaves more room for item references under that prefix, which suits manufacturers with a wide product range. A longer company prefix leaves less room, which suits smaller firms with a narrow product range. GS1 Türkiye assigns the prefix length based on the annual turnover declared at application time.
