Scope of the IFS PACsecure Standard

IFS PACsecure is a quality standard applied to all forms of primary and secondary packaging materials. The aims of IFS PACsecure are to establish food-safety expectations for packaging materials and to support a structured, regular analysis of those expectations across the production cycle.

IFS PACsecure, the packaging-safety standard, is the product of a joint publication by the Canada-based food analysis sector and packaging consortium partners. The standard covers the primary and secondary materials used at the packaging stage and their interaction with food.

Material Scope

The standard covers paper, flexible materials, rigid plastic, metal, glass, cups, and other natural materials. It addresses every material type used in food-contact and secondary packaging.

Requirement Scope

IFS PACsecure requirements cover management responsibility, quality and food-safety management, resource management, production processes, measurement, analysis, improvement, and food defence. This covers both manufacturing controls and supporting-system controls such as supplier approval and complaint handling.

Production-Environment Controls

Production environment controls include site layout, hygiene zoning, pest control, equipment maintenance, personnel hygiene, allergen management where relevant, and cleaning. The standard expects the operator to document these controls and verify their effectiveness on a planned cycle.

Relationship With Customers

IFS PACsecure expects the operator to operate a structured customer-interface process: contract review, specifications management, claims and complaints handling, and recall capability. Many food brand-owners expect the packaging supplier to be able to demonstrate these interfaces at their audit.
