Requirements for Setting Up the ISO 16001 System
Contact Sistem Patent Kalite for the detail on what an ISO 16001 (BS EN 16001) energy management system implementation involves.
The requirements for setting up the ISO 16001 system are summarised in the list below.
- Define the organisation's requirements, its scope, and its boundaries.
- Draft the energy policy and set the energy objectives.
- Conduct the initial energy review so that the baseline is in place before improvement work begins.
- Define the stages of the system and the responsibilities of each role.
- Identify the resources needed to meet the energy objectives.
- Set up the methods that monitor and analyse energy consumption.
- Define the energy performance indicators and the quality of the energy data.
- Put effective tools in place for operational control.
- Review and monitor the improvement of energy performance on a set cycle.
What Each Requirement Looks Like in Practice
The energy review is usually the most demanding item on the list. It asks the organisation to identify every significant consumer of electricity, fuel, steam, and compressed air on site, classify each one against its current performance, and rank the opportunities. The review then feeds directly into the objectives and the improvement programme.
Most organisations already hold some of the evidence the standard requires in spreadsheets, SCADA screens, and finance reports. The project brings that evidence into a single management system with clear ownership, rather than leaving it scattered. Once the system is running, the management review uses the energy performance indicators to check that the policy commitments are being met.
Note on ISO 50001
ISO 50001 has largely replaced ISO 16001 in new implementations and follows a similar build pattern with a tighter alignment to the ISO high-level structure. If you are starting a fresh project, Sistem Patent Kalite usually recommends scoping the work to ISO 50001 unless an existing contract or tender requires BS EN 16001 by name.
