ISO 16001 is an international management system standard that helps an organisation reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and its energy costs by defining the systems and procedures needed to manage energy efficiently. The standard provides the structure for putting an energy management system in place and keeping it working.
ISO 16001 reflects the best current practice built on top of the wider international standards and regulatory framework for energy. It sets out the requirements for an energy management system aligned to environmental management practice. The standard supports the development and implementation of the organisation's energy policy and helps it identify the significant uses of energy, the management controls required, the programmes that reduce consumption, and the targets against which performance is measured.
EN 16001 applies to every type of activity. The size of the organisation, its location, and its sector do not limit the standard's applicability. That said, a company that works directly in the energy sector or has greenhouse gas emission obligations to meet will find the standard particularly relevant to its regulatory position.
How the Standard Works Alongside Other Management Systems
ISO 16001 shares a structure with ISO 14001 on environmental management and lines up with ISO 9001 at the management review level. Organisations that already operate an integrated management system can fold the energy management processes into their existing documentation rather than build a new stand-alone system. For newer projects, ISO 50001 is now the more common reference; we can run the documentation to either standard depending on the tender or customer requirement.
