What the BRC Consumer Products Standard Is
The BRC Consumer Products standard was first issued in 1998 by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), originally as a technical standard that the UK retailers used with their supplier base. The Consumer Products version is a quality certification programme operated through a global network of accredited certification bodies, used by supplier companies across international markets.
The scheme is adopted by product suppliers worldwide, and in particular by operators supplying UK retailers. Retailers are obliged to offer safe and legal products to consumers, and they must exercise appropriate care in development, manufacturing, distribution, advertising, and sale. As demand for branded retailer-own and third-party products grows, the scheme helps ensure that product quality and safety meet consumer expectations.
Regardless of country of origin, the standard is suitable for manufacturers supplying consumer products to UK retailers. It is designed to cover products under the EU General Product Safety Directive (2005) and related product-specific legislation.
How Sistem Patent Kalite Helps
We run BRC Consumer Products projects end to start: scope definition, product risk categorisation, documentation build-out, internal audit, and certification audit preparation. For suppliers already certified to ISO 9001, we reuse the existing management system and focus on the Consumer Products clauses.
