What UFAS is

UFAS, the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme, was launched in 1998. It now covers more than 95% of compound feed produced commercially in the UK and Ireland. More than 700 participating organisations in these two markets work under UFAS. The scheme is based on HACCP principles, originally pioneered by NASA and also at the foundation of EU food and feed regulations.

The UFAS scheme (also known under ISO Guide 65) is audited and approved by an independent certification body in line with the internationally accepted ISO 45011 standard. This independent certification body is itself reviewed each year to confirm the standard's consistent and fair application. Partly as a result of those independent audits, local authorities now factor UFAS participation into the risk assessments they run on feed operations. The scheme aligns with UK livestock-assurance frameworks (Red Tractor farm assurance, Quality Meat Scotland), since major supermarkets require these arrangements for the domestically produced animal products they purchase.
