What is the EN 15593 food packaging standard?

EN 15593 sets hygiene requirements for manufacturers operating at every stage of the food chain. Food must be produced, packaged, sold, and distributed in a way that does not threaten food safety, and the packaging itself has to be produced under hygienic conditions that keep the product safe until it reaches the consumer.

Companies that produce packaging for food products use EN 15593 to demonstrate that manufacturing runs under hygienic conditions and that hazards are controlled. In other words, the standard is applied to packaging and bagging operations to secure product safety on the consumer end.

EN 15593 draws on the structure of ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 and covers hygiene requirements for manufacturers and suppliers of food-contact packaging. It addresses both the management system and the factory-floor hygiene conditions of the packaging producer.

EN 15593 is an internationally recognised standard for hygiene management in food-packaging manufacture. It defines requirements for food-packaging suppliers and producers, including storage and transport. The standard is built around hazard assessment and risk analysis, sets appropriate control points, and measures hygiene performance at every stage of manufacture. Its requirements are designed to fit cleanly alongside management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 22000, but it can also operate as a standalone hygiene management framework.
