What is enhanced fisheries under MSC?
MSC enhanced fisheries sit on the spectrum between pure wild-capture and pure aquaculture. They involve human intervention at some stage. MSC recognises three categories of enhanced fisheries.
Catch-and-grow fisheries
Also known as capture-based aquaculture. For example, rope-grown mussels. The value of aquaculture was recognised as wild-capture practices changed.
Hatch-and-catch fisheries
Also known as culture-based fisheries. In these operations, fisheries introduce eggs, larvae, or juvenile fish from hatcheries and then harvest them in the wild once mature.
Habitat-modified fisheries
To qualify, the fishery has to operate within the principles of enhanced fisheries.
