What Are the MSC Standards?

  • Sustainable fisheries
  • Seafood traceability

MSC has three core overarching principles:

  • Principle 1 - Sustainable fish stocks: keeping fish populations at a defined level.
  • Principle 2 - Minimising environmental impact: reducing environmental impact to protect the ecosystem.
  • Principle 3 - Effective management: compliance with national and international law.

MSC fisheries are assessed against these principles.

MSC Sustainable Fisheries Principles

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainable fisheries principles state that:

  • A well-managed, responsible fishery maintains the health of the surrounding marine environment.
  • A well-managed, responsible fishery harvests in a sustainable way.

Recognition of this standard in the certification market reflects a commitment to sustainable practice and sustainable outcomes.

To hold the MSC certificate, the fishery has to align with the principles. MSC is one of the strongest schemes in place for protecting the world's fish stocks. Paired with independent third-party assessment, the MSC environmental standard offers a solid path to sustainable fisheries.
