Patent application

A patent application is the first formal step in protecting an invention through registration.

Before the registration application is filed, a patent pre-search has to review the invention. If the pre-search confirms that the invention meets the criteria for registration, the application file has to be prepared before filing, complete and accurate and in line with the applicable law.

Document preparation for the patent application is carried out under the guidance of the experienced engineers at Sistem Patent, the patent agent handling the file.

Abstract of the invention

A concise text that describes the subject of the invention and the improvements it introduces. The abstract has to be prepared carefully, because it is the shortest complete statement of what the invention does.

Description

The section that describes the invention in full. Another important element of the registration application is identifying close alternatives to the invention, the differences between them, the advantages the invention offers, any disadvantages, the technical problem it solves, and the technical novelty it provides. Preparation of the description by the Sistem Patent engineers who know the technical subject matter is critical.

Technical drawings and photographs

Draft drawings of the invention, where available, with the parts that make up the invention labelled and numbered in the drawings.

Claims

The sections of the invention that the applicant wants to protect are set out one by one. Details of what must not be infringed are stated here. Including this type of information in the patent application file is what makes it possible to block copies later.

Required documents

All the documents required by the official authority for the patent application: the applicant's corporate or personal details, the inventor's information, and the power of attorney.

Once the content-based registration file is ready, the registration application can be filed.

Where is a patent application filed?

In Turkey, Sistem Patent, as a registered patent agent, is authorised to carry out the filing with the competent authority. For protection in countries beyond Turkey, international applications are required.

International protection is obtained through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Once the documents for the patent application are complete, Sistem Patent files the application with the authority. From that point, the registration stage begins.
