GMP+ feed safety standard certification

GMP+ stands for Good Manufacturing Practices. The standard was first designed and issued in 1992. Over time, it was extended with ISO quality-management and HACCP requirements and has developed into a full certification system.

GMP+ is built on the Deming principles of act, check, and control. Every action under the scheme requires written backing. The standard defines requirements for feed production, transport, storage, personnel, and the feed-production site.

At present more than 13,000 certified organisations in 70 countries hold a GMP+ certificate, making it the most widely adopted certification in the feed-safety space. The applicable GMP+ standards bring animal-feed manufacturers and distribution-trading firms together under a shared quality framework, covering livestock-farm ingredient-supply practice. The distributor-trade firm benefits from the manufacturer's GMP+ quality system for the safety of the animal feed handled.

The older assurance scheme, which met the previous legal requirements, is being phased out and replaced by the newer GMP+ standard. The new standard carries requirements applicable both to the secure supply of safe animal feed to livestock farms and to the commercial practice that the distributor-trade firm can apply on its own side. The standard was developed in close cooperation with direct stakeholders.
