Feed material safety and quality certification

FEMAS covers all feed raw materials used as compound feed or in mixtures for food-safety purposes. The scheme draws its foundation from standards originally applied by NASA, enriched by the HACCP framework.

FEMAS is recognised under independent certification bodies accredited to ISO 45011 in line with ISO 65 guidance.

FEMAS is the name of the association formed by sector representatives working together. FEMAS is also recognised under mutual-recognition arrangements with other feed food-safety schemes, including the Dutch GMP, the Belgian GMP (Ovocom), and the German QS.

Scope and objectives of the FEMAS standard

• FEMAS addresses the quality-assurance system for feed materials used in animal-feed production, including vitamins, enzymes, and other ingredients.
• Protect human health through the food-safety chain.
• Support the use of raw materials of traceable, documented origin at the buyer's end.
• Apply HACCP and good manufacturing practice (GMP) during production.
• Cover all related conditions, including storage, transport, and feed trade.
• Span every step from raw-material release through supply and into the finished product.
• FEMAS also requires legal compliance. Producers must meet the applicable legal requirements alongside the scheme itself.
