EFISC: European Feed Ingredients Safety Certification
EFISC at a glance
EFISC stands for the European Feed Ingredients Safety Certification, a scheme designed for conformity with European standards and requirements.
EFISC was developed by European feed industry organisations working together. Its core aim is to verify that feed ingredients are produced in line with EU standards and to record that verification through a third-party certificate.
EFISC is built on European Food Regulation 178/2002 as its primary reference point, and it draws on HACCP, PAS 222, and the wider European food-compliance framework.
Feed sits at the start of the food chain and directly affects the quality of animal-derived foods, which means it has a direct influence on the entire food chain.
EFISC is recognised under mutual-recognition arrangements with other feed-sector schemes, including GMP+, QS, and Ovocom. Compound feed producers can buy and use an EFISC-certified ingredient under the other recognised schemes without a duplicate audit.
What EFISC certification covers. EFISC applies to feed raw materials, manufacturing, finished products, storage, transport, and sale.
Benefits of EFISC certification
With EFISC certification, feed ingredients become eligible for free movement across the European market. An EFISC-certified feed is also listed in a recognised database and made visible online, which strengthens both market access and traceability of origin. For the producer, EFISC establishes a recognised quality reference for feed safety.
Requirements for EFISC certification
The main certification requirements are as follows:
- Prerequisites for feed production
- Operational conditions
- Risk analysis
- HACCP requirements
- Documentation
- Recall procedure
Components of the EFISC certificate
- Sector codes applied for specific scopes
- A code of good practice for safe feed materials (general conditions)
- Sector-specific documents (products, hazards, processes, risk assessment, and control measures)
Sector certificates are developed by sector organisations in cooperation with the EFISC technical committee and the responsible European feed-ingredients bodies, and they form an integral part of the EFISC feed-safety system. The codes of practice set out in the sector documents are themselves a component of the EFISC feed-safety management system.
As set out in the scheme rules, EFISC runs a side-by-side, parallel, and independent certification arrangement. Version 3.1 of the EFISC certification rules, dated 15 February 2015, is the reference text. Participation in the EFISC audit framework is voluntary.
