Current situation in Turkiye under SA 8000

Looking at the current situation in Turkiye under SA 8000, the picture is poor. In particular, the country scores low on child labour.

On child-labour employment, Turkiye is ranked fourth after Bangladesh, Kenya, and Haiti, behind countries including Egypt, Algeria, Bolivia, India, Nicaragua, Indonesia, Guatemala, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Pakistan.

Driven in part by chronic inflation, working people, in particular civil servants and labourers, are not paid wages in keeping with human dignity.

Because the concept of the social state has not been taken seriously enough, the social-security network has reached a point where it cannot cover even the most basic needs, such as health.

Turkiye has signed the ILO Minimum Age Convention, committing to eliminate child labour effectively and to raise the minimum age of employment to a level that allows for the mental and physical development of children. The country has also accepted the ILO International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Despite these commitments, the expected progress has not yet been achieved in practice.
