VDE as an organisation

VDE is the German association for electrical, electronic, and information technologies and for the science and practice connected to them. It works to promote a better climate for international innovation, to uphold the highest safety standards, to shape engineering programmes, and to encourage broad public acceptance of new technologies.

VDE combines scientific activity, industry-standardisation work, and product testing under one roof. Its work covers advancing safety standards for electrical and electronic products, and the preparation of national and international standards and technical regulations for certified electrical products, equipment, and systems.

The VDE testing and certification institute is headquartered in Offenbach, Germany. Through its global network of certification and testing centres and a staff of more than 500, the institute tests around 100,000 products each year for national and international manufacturers. In Germany and beyond, electric toothbrushes, electric cookers, washing machines, and most everyday electrical products used by consumers have been certified by the institute. The VDE certification mark is recognised as a symbol of the highest safety standards. More than 200,000 products worldwide carry the VDE mark.

VDE's national and international network of experts supports VDE members through knowledge transfer, training programmes, and dedicated online offerings. With roughly 8,000 students and around 1,300 corporate members inside a total of about 35,000 members, VDE is one of the largest technical and scientific associations in Europe.

VDE concentrates its support on central innovation fields covering communication, mobility, energy, and life sciences. Its goal is to build communication and to strengthen the position of Germany and Europe in these safe and regulated sectors.
