ISO 29001 Oil and Gas is a technical specification that sets out quality management system requirements for organisations that supply products and services to the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries. ISO/TS 29001 is seeing steadily wider uptake across the international oil and gas sector.

ISO 29001 builds on the foundation of ISO 9001 and adds requirements that focus on defect prevention from service providers and on the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain.

The added requirements are set out clearly and in a form that allows auditors to verify them. They raise the assurance on the quality of goods and services received from suppliers and build overall consistency across the supply base. This matters most where an error in a product or service has serious consequences for the operator or for the industry as a whole.

Typical certified organisations include manufacturers of valves, pumps, pipe, and fittings; providers of welding, coating, and inspection services; engineering firms that support drilling, completion, and production operations; and suppliers of chemicals and consumables used in upstream, midstream, and downstream activity. ISO 29001 sits alongside API specifications on the technical side, and alongside ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 on the management-system side.
