ISO 15504 Software Process Improvement (SPICE)
What Is the ISO/IEC 15504 Standard?
ISO/IEC 15504 is an international standard developed to support improvement in the quality of software processes. It was produced through joint work between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The standard provides software engineers with a structured, sustainable approach to managing software processes.
The ISO/IEC 15504 Standard
The standard was first used in 1993 as a Software Process Improvement Model. It was later named SPICE from the English abbreviation of Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination.
How SPICE Is Used
SPICE uses a two-dimensional structure: process areas on one axis and capability levels on the other. Assessors score each process against defined capability levels (0 to 5) based on evidence from the operation.
Current Status
ISO/IEC 15504 has been replaced in practice by the ISO/IEC 330xx family of standards, which carries forward the same process-assessment logic. Operators already using SPICE typically migrate their assessment framework onto the ISO/IEC 330xx family at the next review cycle.
