How to Obtain ISO 50001 Certification

The audit that Sistem Patent Kalite conducts is a third-party audit. Organisations that have already built and put the system into live use can be certified after the steps below are complete.

1. Quotation

Organisations that want to obtain an ISO 50001 certificate request a price quotation from the certification body. The certification body sets the price based mainly on the number of staff employed at the organisation to be certified. Larger organisations require more audit days, and because the full audit plan depends on staff headcount, this is the first input the certification body needs. If the quotation is accepted, the organisation formally applies to the certification body, Sistem Patent Kalite.

2. Application

The organisation seeking certification completes the Sistem Patent Kalite application form accurately and in full, and submits it along with the energy management system (ISO 50001) documentation and any other requested records to the certification body.

3. Document Review

The applicant also submits a copy of the system documentation at the time of application. The lead auditor assigned by the certification body analyses the documentation to confirm that it meets the requirements of the standard. If the requirements are met, the organisation is added to the audit schedule. If not, the gaps are reported to the organisation in writing and the organisation is asked to close them. Once the gaps are closed, the organisation is added to the audit schedule. Alongside the document review, the lead auditor may carry out a pre-audit visit if required.

4. Audit Planning

In line with ISO 17021 requirements, Sistem Patent Kalite sets the audit duration needed to see the organisation's activities on site, assigns the right auditors, and confirms the date. This information is shared with the organisation for approval. Once approval is received, the audit is carried out on the agreed date.

5. Audit

The audit takes place on the agreed date. It starts with an opening meeting. Following the audit plan, the auditors visit the relevant functions on site, review the system documentation, and observe the operation to confirm that the system is in place. After the clauses of the standard and the audited functions have been covered, the auditors review any findings and reach a positive or negative recommendation on certification. This recommendation is communicated to the organisation in the closing meeting. If the outcome is negative, the organisation is asked to close out the nonconformities. If the outcome is positive, or once the nonconformities are closed and the closure is verified, the certification body's internal process continues.

6. Contract

Once the audit report is reviewed and confirmed by the certification committee, the certificate is prepared, the certification contract is signed with the organisation, and the certificate is issued. The certificate and contract are valid for three years, during which the certification body conducts at least one surveillance audit per year to confirm that the system continues to meet the requirements. The ongoing programme is based on the findings of that audit and the terms of the contract.

7. Recertification

One or two months before the certificate reaches the end of its validity, the certificate holder applies for extension. A recertification audit is then conducted and the validity is extended for a further three years.
