What is the purpose of the FSC certificate?

The FSC Forest Management Certificate meets growing environmental awareness among businesses that want raw and semi-raw materials sourced from well-managed forests. That assurance is provided by accredited international certification bodies.

• One form of FSC certification is the Chain of Custody Certificate (FSC Chain of Custody Certification). The Chain of Custody Certificate defines the unbroken route a product follows from the forest through production and distribution, including any transformations along the way, until it reaches the end consumer. From the consumer's perspective, FSC describes the product's origin, while FSC-CoC secures the delivery of the correct product through the correct path. The FSC-CoC certificate proves that the product comes from well-managed forest areas and controlled sources, and that it has not been mixed with products made from uncontrolled sources.

• A concrete example: a printing company that produces labels must show that the raw material used in its paper comes from a well-managed forest, and that there is a control network in place to prevent mixing during production, storage, and shipping. The FSC logo and registration numbers on the product and raw material are the visible sign that this control network is in place.

• FSC covers timber, lumber, and wood types, along with paper and paper-based products (magazines, newspapers), all kinds of furniture, wooden toys, musical instruments, wooden pencils, and many similar products.

The FSC-CoC mark

Whether the product is timber or paper, the FSC-CoC mark on any wood-sourced product indicates that the trees in the forest of origin are managed sustainably and that this fact has been confirmed by an independent body. Deforestation has many causes, but commercial production is recognised as the main pressure.
