What Is the FCC Standard?

The FCC standard is the standard set by the Federal Communications Commission in the United States. The FCC regulates personal computers and other devices according to Class A and Class B definitions. In general, the standard covers predicted radio-frequency emissions from equipment such as personal computers.

Class A devices are units operated for industrial, commercial, or special-purpose uses in settings other than offices or private homes.

Class B devices are units that can operate in almost any environment, including the home. For that reason, Class B equipment is subject to tougher testing than Class A. A Class B rating indicates that the unit's radio-frequency emissions are at a level that will not interfere with other devices such as radios or televisions.

Computer systems and components must have their emissions values measured by the FCC before the product is placed on the market. Under FCC rules, this is the manufacturer's responsibility. For example, before a new computer system is sold, the manufacturer applies to the FCC to have its emissions values measured and classified. The manufactured system is then assigned a classification (A or B). The FCC classification appears in the user manual or on the product itself. Buyers should consider the FCC class when choosing a product, with FCC-classified devices preferred.
