ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system and its scope
ISO 14001 is the international management-system standard used to manage the environmental aspects of an organization's activities, products and services. The 2015 revision brought in a life-cycle perspective, the concept of context of the organization and the role of interested parties. It applies directly to manufacturing sites with emissions, waste, water consumption, energy use or chemical handling, and also to service organizations with a measurable environmental footprint. Certification reduces regulatory risk and helps meet supplier qualification criteria in export markets.
The PDCA cycle and the life-cycle perspective
The standard operates on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. Identification, evaluation and control of environmental aspects are built on top of that cycle and reviewed during management review.
- Identification of significant environmental aspects and their impacts
- Tracking of applicable legal and other requirements
- Environmental objectives with measurable indicators
- Product and service assessment from a life-cycle perspective
- Emergency preparedness and response planning
Certification timeline and integration with other systems
After environmental-aspect mapping and a legal-requirement register, Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits close the certification path. Thanks to the Annex SL structure, ISO 14001 can be audited jointly with ISO 9001 or ISO 45001 in a single audit, which lowers audit days and cost. The certificate is valid for 3 years, with surveillance audits in years 1 and 2 and a recertification audit in year 3. Sistem Patent Kalite issues ISO 14001 certificates under TÜRKAK (the Turkish Accreditation Agency).
