Accreditation in Medical Tourism

Accreditation in medical tourism is an evaluation process that verifies whether a health-service provider meets a set of coordinated requirements aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of service delivery. In hospitals, accreditation is a process where external auditors assess conformity with the defined standards for service delivery.

On accreditation in medical tourism, health institutions aiming to capture market share through medical tourism first need to hold international accreditation. In particular, health institutions aiming to serve developed countries have to offer their patients accredited service, because those patients expect quality assurance through accredited providers. Today, although several accreditation bodies exist, the most respected international body for health-institution accreditation is the US-based Joint Commission International (JCI). The European counterpart is the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). JCI accreditation makes it easier for the institution to receive patient flow from the international arena. In Turkiye, 43 health institutions hold JCI accreditation: 38 hospitals, 3 clinical laboratories, 1 outpatient treatment centre, and 1 medical transport centre.
