October 14, World Standards Day

"If you cannot guarantee that minimum safety and quality standards are met, you cannot sell your product as a global manufacturer. The result is fragmented, unsafe goods that do not work with the other equipment already in the home."

Without cross-country standards, the global supply chain for goods and services most of us take for granted would lack trust. To draw attention to this, ISO, together with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), celebrates World Standards Day on October 14.

When we look for a service provider or scan a well-stocked shelf, the products and services that earn our trust are the ones that meet our expectations. That trust rests on the standards and conformity assessments behind them. A breach of confidence, once triggered, is hard to repair.

Knowledge alone is of little practical use without standards behind it. Standards are what deliver safety, reliability, and interoperability in office equipment, household goods, and technology products across the global economy.

International Standards are developed through a balanced, open, and transparent process by experts from around the world. Trust sits at the center of this work, with practical answers to real problems as the output.

World Standards Day has been observed for nearly 70 years. Through voluntary consensus-based standards, ISO has supported industrial progress, spurred global trade, and helped shape a healthier, safer environment.

Reliable standards that align with new developments and work with existing technology keep products and services dependable. Governments use standards as trusted answers when finalizing regulations, giving consumers peace of mind that they are not putting themselves or their families at risk.

IEC, ISO, ITU, and all their members mark World Standards Day every October 14. The development of voluntary international standards is the result of thousands of experts cooperating worldwide.
