An Invention That Could Offer Hope to Kidney Patients

"Scientists have invented a wearable kidney that could treat kidney disease. If it passes its tests, the wearable kidney could help 2 million patients."

Scientists searching for a treatment for kidney disease have developed a wearable-kidney project. If the wearable kidney passes its tests, it will offer hope to the 2 million patients currently waiting for care.

Kidney failure affects around 2 million people and is one of today's most serious health problems. A wearable kidney has now been designed for patients who spend part of their lives connected to a dialysis unit.

Currently in testing.

The device has been tested on seven patients, who responded positively. Known as WAK, the device is still in its testing phase. After the positive results from these seven patients, technical problems surfaced during use.

Work to Resolve the Issues

The issues were traced to excess carbon dioxide bubbles forming in the dialysis circuit, along with problems in the dialysate flow and blood compatibility. Researchers are working to resolve them.

If It Passes Testing, It Could Help Kidney Patients

If the device passes its tests and reaches the market, it will first offer hope to dialysis patients in Turkey and then to dialysis patients in other countries.
